Spanish influencer Marta Ojeda, who is recognized for her YouTube channel Ahorraconmarta, has publicly criticized former Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias. Her remarks came after a video was released showing Iglesias commenting on Cuba's situation while staying at a luxury hotel in Havana.
In her post, Ojeda labeled Iglesias as "despicable" for allegedly downplaying the island's crisis from a privileged setting, far removed from the harsh realities that Cubans endure daily.
"How despicable must you be to travel to Cuba, stay in a luxury hotel, and claim that the situation isn't as bad as it's portrayed?" she questioned.
The young influencer condemned Iglesias for making these assessments while many on the island are facing power outages, food shortages, lack of medical supplies, and water access issues.
"Imagine being a Cuban without access to electricity, water, food, or medicine, and then having Pablo tell you 'it's not that bad,' all while he's sitting in a five-star hotel," she sarcastically remarked.
Controversial Visit by Iglesias
Ojeda also pointed out that, based on visible elements in the video, several users identified Iglesias as staying at a five-star hotel on Paseo del Prado, exacerbating the criticism on social media platforms.
Iglesias's trip is part of an international delegation connected to the "Nuestra América" flotilla, intending to deliver over 20 tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba, including food, hygiene products, and medicines.
Nonetheless, the presence of prominent leftist figures in such initiatives continues to spark controversy, particularly because they are perceived as endorsing the official narrative of the Cuban regime from privileged positions.
Backlash and Public Outcry
"These people don't care about disrespecting us because they never face consequences. These 2.0 flotillas are supposedly traveling to Cuba to deliver more than 20 tons of hygiene products, food, and medicine. They represent the most outdated of the international left, defending the Castro regime from the comfort of capitalist society. Of course, from a lavish villa and earning over €100,000 a year, we're all very communist," Ojeda criticized.
In the comments on her post, numerous users expressed outrage. Some highlighted the stark contrast between the everyday lives of Cubans and the conditions enjoyed by these visitors, while others questioned the actual impact of such actions.
The backlash follows Iglesias's recent statement that the situation in Cuba "is difficult, but not as it is described from abroad," after meeting with Communist Party officials in Havana.
