A Cuban national was apprehended at the A Coruña Airport in Spain, facing charges for attempting to smuggle a substantial quantity of goods. The Civil Guard discovered 198 cigars, 4,400 cigarettes, and 80 Viagra pills in his luggage, all of which he tried to bring into the country without declaring them at customs.
The incident took place on March 10 at the Alvedro airport, during a routine inspection carried out by the Civil Guard's Fiscal and Borders Detachment.
The 41-year-old suspect was traveling on a flight originating from Cuba, with a layover in Madrid before reaching A Coruña.
Smuggling Attempt Uncovered
Authorities reported that the traveler was spotted as he proceeded towards the "green channel," a route designated for passengers claiming not to carry goods that require declaration. When questioned by officials about his baggage contents, the Cuban insisted he only had "two bundles of cigars."
However, the Civil Guard officers, suspicious of his claims, decided to conduct a more thorough search of his possessions.
"In light of the detected indications, a physical inspection of his belongings was carried out, revealing a quantity of goods far exceeding the legal limits for personal use," stated the Civil Guard in a press release shared with local media.
Contraband and Legal Action
During the search, authorities uncovered 198 cigars of various brands and 22 cartons of cigarettes, totaling 4,400 units. Alongside the tobacco products, 80 tablets of 100mg sildenafil citrate, commonly known as Viagra, were also discovered.
The passenger lacked the necessary health and customs documentation to import these pharmaceuticals into Spain, constituting an administrative violation.
The Civil Guard proceeded to issue the corresponding administrative contraband violation reports for both the tobacco and pharmaceutical items. The confiscated goods were placed under the custody of the A Coruña Customs and Special Taxes Office, which will continue processing the case.
This action is part of the routine fiscal safeguard checks conducted by Spanish authorities at airports to detect the unauthorized entry of goods subject to regulation, particularly tobacco, alcohol, or medications, especially when they exceed personal use limits or lack the required documentation.
