A Southwest Airlines flight bound for South Florida was redirected to Atlanta's airport on Friday night due to what was initially perceived as a potential security issue on board.
Authorities, along with the airline, later confirmed that the situation stemmed from a misunderstanding involving a passenger's actions.
Flight 2094 had taken off from Nashville, Tennessee, en route to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport when the crew decided to make a precautionary landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initially reported that the plane was rerouted following a disturbance during the flight.
Southwest Airlines clarified that the decision to alter the flight path was made to ensure passenger safety while the matter was being resolved.
"The crew of Southwest Airlines Flight 2094 chose to divert to Atlanta out of an abundance of caution, due to what ultimately was a misunderstanding regarding a customer's behavior," stated the airline in a press release.
"We sincerely apologize to our customers for the misunderstanding and the substantial delay. For Southwest, nothing is more important than the safety of our customers," they added.
NBC News reported that the confusion arose from a scheduled alarm on the passenger's phone. The device was set to remind the individual of prayer times during Ramadan, which caused concern among some travelers and led to reports of a possible threat.
Videos shared on social media captured the tense moments inside the plane as it was diverted to Atlanta. In one video shared by the Only In Dade page, several passengers can be seen with their hands raised and heads lowered as security agents board the aircraft and escort one passenger off.
Other footage showed crew members instructing passengers to keep their hands visible as the plane prepared to land.
Additional images depicted authorities inspecting the area around the plane with sniffer dogs upon its arrival at the airport.
No Real Threat FoundAfter reviewing the situation, Atlanta Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) concluded that there was no credible threat and confirmed that no charges would be filed in the case.
Southwest reiterated that the incident was due to "a misunderstanding regarding a customer's behavior."
Following the authorities' intervention, passengers were transferred to another aircraft with the same flight number to complete their journey to South Florida.
The plane eventually arrived at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.
"We appreciate the professionalism of our crew and offer our sincerest apologies to our customers for the significant delay," said a Southwest spokesperson.
"For Southwest, nothing is more important than the safety of its customers and employees," they concluded.
