President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Kristi Noem will step down from her role as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and will be succeeded by Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin. Mullin is set to take office on March 31, 2026.

The announcement was made by Trump via his social media platform, Truth Social. Trump explained that Noem will transition to a new position as Special Envoy for “The Shield of the Americas,” a fresh security initiative for the Western Hemisphere to be unveiled on Saturday in Doral, Florida.

Trump expressed his gratitude for Noem's contributions to the DHS, highlighting her significant achievements in border control. “Kristi Noem has served us well, achieving numerous spectacular results, especially at the border,” Trump stated.

Markwayne Mullin to Lead DHS

The President confirmed that Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin will be the new Secretary of Homeland Security. Trump praised Mullin's political career, noting his decade-long tenure in the House of Representatives and his three years as a senator. He also emphasized Mullin's prominent role within the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.

Trump further highlighted that Mullin is the only Native American in the Senate and described him as a steadfast advocate for tribal communities. According to Trump, the new DHS leader will focus on strengthening border security, tackling crime associated with illegal immigration, and curbing drug trafficking into the United States.

“He will work tirelessly to keep our border secure and make America safe again,” Trump declared.

This appointment comes at a time when immigration policy and the management of the southern border remain central issues in the Trump administration's agenda. As of now, Noem has not issued any statements regarding her transition.
