U.S. Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar has acknowledged the suffering of Cuban families and assured that freedom is on the horizon for the Cuban people.
"We fully understand how tough it is to negotiate when a mother is hungry. Knowing that you had a meal in Miami while your children [in Cuba] are not eating. We understand this completely, but we also know that the people are surviving on scraps," stated the Cuban-American congresswoman during a conversation with Ambrosio Hernández from Univision, alongside her colleague Carlos Giménez.
Salazar likened the pressure exerted by the Trump Administration to childbirth.
"It's like giving birth; the child is coming through the canal, and once the child is born—which will be the great freedom for the people—then happiness will come to the entire population. That's what we're working towards," she affirmed.
The Republican congresswoman expressed her awareness of "the sacrifices our families are making inside Cuba. This is a challenging process, but the birth of freedom is on its way."
"The regime is in its final stages, and the Cuban people are closer than ever to experiencing freedom," she added on X.
Holding Raúl Castro Accountable
Salazar's remarks came last Thursday following a memorial event in South Florida, where several Cuban-American legislators joined families of victims to commemorate the attack that took place on February 24, 1996. During this incident, Cuban fighter jets shot down two civilian Cessna planes on a humanitarian mission over the Florida Straits.
The lawmakers assert that there is substantial evidence to directly implicate General Raúl Castro, then Minister of the Armed Forces, in ordering the attack.
"We have asked the Administration, the President, and the U.S. Attorney General to review the facts and, if they find—as we know they will—the evidence, to prosecute the person who ordered the cold-blooded murder of these individuals," said Mario Díaz-Balart, as reported by Telemundo 51.
"It's time to hold Raúl Castro accountable," wrote Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar on X, affirming that the four Americans were "deliberately murdered in international airspace by the Cuban regime."
