Delcy Rodríguez, the interim leader of Venezuela, declared on Monday that the nation has "matured" since the United States ordered the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro a month ago. She emphasized that the government in Caracas is striving to establish a process of national dialogue and reconciliation.
In a televised address, Rodríguez asserted that "extremism in Venezuela has been isolated" and unveiled a proposal for an amnesty law as part of a program for democratic coexistence and peace.
"A political dialogue has been initiated, led by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez. We have submitted an amnesty law proposal to the Judiciary to close this period of political violence," she stated.
The interim president underscored that the Chavista government is advocating for reconciliation "among Venezuelans" and highlighted that disputes should be settled through "Bolivarian diplomacy of peace."
Rodríguez highlighted that in recent days she has had phone conversations with President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as part of efforts to reestablish diplomatic channels with Washington.
"Differences with the United States must be addressed diplomatically. I have spoken with President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio, and that should be the path: respect," she affirmed.
The interim leader reiterated that Venezuela has transformed external aggression into a drive for internal stability: "A month ago, when the Venezuelan people faced an armed attack from a nuclear power, extremism sought chaos. Yet the people, with maturity, recovered and have taken steps towards national unity," she asserted.
Rodríguez reiterated that the government's aim is to maintain national tranquility and reinforce institutions following the political crisis triggered by the U.S. military operation that resulted in Nicolás Maduro's detention on January 3rd.
