The arrest of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro has sparked mixed reactions on the global stage and among residents in Chicago, where recent days have seen a series of protests and political statements.

While some celebrate the apprehension, others voice concerns about what they view as an unlawful military action. The Party for Socialism and Liberation organized emergency protests in various cities across the nation, arguing against war and foreign intervention, according to Univision.

On January 3, dozens of protesters gathered at Federal Plaza in Chicago's Loop despite frigid temperatures, rallying with the slogan “Hands Off Venezuela.” The demonstration began around 5:00 p.m., near the intersection of West Adams Street and South Dearborn Street.

This mobilization was part of over 120 nationally coordinated protests over the weekend. Protesters labeled the military action as “illegal” and claimed it violated international law.

Chants such as “No More Wars” and “Hands Off Venezuela” echoed through the crowd, with many demonstrators holding signs alleging oil-related motives behind the intervention.

Several events and protests were planned for Sunday throughout the Chicago metropolitan area, focusing on dialogue, reflection, and demonstration concerning the situation in Venezuela.

One gathering was scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at 951 W. Wise Rd., Schaumburg, titled “Venezuela is Happening,” carrying the message: “All organized for the transition: the time for freedom has come.”

Another meeting was organized at La Rica Arepa restaurant, located at 2913 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, by the Venezuelan Alliance in Illinois, aimed at discussing a potential political transition in the South American nation.

Since 2022, approximately 50,000 Venezuelans have arrived in Chicago, increasing the interest, concern, and mobilization within this community in response to recent developments.

Many agree that the foremost wish is for any transition in Venezuela to occur peacefully and without violence, avoiding further human cost for the country.
