The Cuban comedian Ulises Toirac has publicly stood up for his fellow performer Geonel Martín, known for his character Gustavito, after controversy erupted over Martín's remarks about happiness in Cuba. Through a Facebook post, Toirac advocated for respect and tolerance towards diverse opinions, expressing regret over the aggressive turn the discussion had taken.
"Recently, Gustavito Sabadazo mentioned in an interview that he had been happy in Cuba... and was met with intolerance from there (which is no different from the intolerance here)," the comedian explained from Playa, Havana.
Toirac elaborated in his post that someone suggested he advise his former colleague, but he replied that the advice should instead be directed at those who reject differing viewpoints. "We need to learn to let people think whatever they truly believe without attacking them, simply because someone else's experiences in Cuba weren't happy. Geonel Martín was happy. Period!" he wrote.
"Look, my greatest joys are in CUBA despite everything. I can't separate myself from a country where I have been famous and beloved by the majority (which is what Gustavito feels as well). We don't think alike. No human thinks exactly like another," the comedian added, reflecting on his own connection to the island.
Toirac believes that the core issue lies in the inability to accept differences: "In the end, the goal of creating intolerant individuals prevailed. If we can't overcome this, we'll never achieve anything as a nation. We'll never build a society that serves the interests of the majority. Because, in reality, there is no majority, just millions of individuals who can't tolerate another's thoughts unless they match their own."
At another point in his post, Toirac emphasized that he wished to avoid getting involved in controversies, yet reaffirmed his affection for Martín. "I didn't want to dive into the Miami CDR's mess, but he remains my brother, and I love him dearly. What happened was wrong."
Toirac concluded his message by acknowledging his colleague's talent and career: "A remarkable artist whose work should be appreciated."
The comedian's reflection follows an interview where Geonel Martín discussed his life outside the island from Miami, stating that "he was happier in Cuba." Days later, the comedian clarified his statements on social media, explaining that his words had been taken out of context and emphasizing that he is also happy in the United States.
Both Toirac and Martín were part of one of the most beloved comedic duos on Cuban television, a symbol of an era that left a mark on generations.
With his message, Toirac not only defended a fellow performer but also issued a broader call for coexistence and respect among Cubans. His post was not a declaration of sides but a warning: that intolerance — no matter its origin — remains the biggest hurdle in reconciling a nation divided by too many silences and grievances.
