At the age of nine, her mother made the decision to move the family to Venezuela in search of better opportunities. In Venezuela, Jany adapted to a new culture and language, but stability was short-lived.
By the time she turned 14, Hugo Chávez's rise to power prompted her Cuban family to migrate once more, this time heading to Miami.
“When we arrived at the Mexican-U.S. border, my mom was taken to a women’s prison, and my brother and I were placed in a foster home,” she recalls. This long and sorrowful month would ultimately shape her future.
Starting Anew in the United States
During her early years in the U.S., Jany faced language barriers and cultural dislocation. It was in school that she began to nurture her dream of pursuing an academic path to defend others.
Yet, support was not always forthcoming. She vividly remembers a teacher handing back a paper covered in red ink, saying, “You’ll never be a lawyer; you're just an immigrant.”
Rather than breaking her spirit, those words ignited a determination that still drives her. “Many people said I couldn’t do it, but with God's help, anything is possible,” she shared.
This faith, which she considers her greatest strength, guided her to become a lawyer and co-found one of Florida and New York's most respected firms specializing in automotive accident rights: Ward Law.
Since 2012, the firm has aided over 31,000 families in securing compensations exceeding a billion dollars. However, it's not the numbers that set Jany apart but her compassionate approach to practicing law.
“I chose to be a lawyer because I felt the frustration of not knowing the language or the laws, of having no one to explain my rights,” she explains. Today, she ensures each client feels prioritized, not just another case.
