Cuba Hosts Animal Improvement and Sustainable Livestock Congress Amid Severe Meat Shortages

Wednesday, December 31, 2025 by Ernesto Alvarez

In the midst of ongoing meat and milk shortages affecting Cuban households, and with cattle virtually disappearing from the countryside, the government is set to hold the 7th Congress on Animal Improvement and Tropical Livestock at the luxurious Meliá Internacional Hotel in Varadero. The event will include discussions on sustainability.

Scheduled from March 24 to 26, the congress is organized by the Center for Research on Animal Improvement in Tropical Livestock (CIMAGT). It will feature panels, workshops, exhibitions, cultural activities, and the first international symposia on genetic resource management and sustainable livestock, as reported by Canal Caribe.

This gathering happens against the backdrop of an unprecedented agricultural crisis, characterized by a continuous decline in meat and milk production and a significant reduction in the national cattle herd due to a lack of animal feed, supplies, and state support.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Cuba has lost over 900,000 head of cattle since 2019, highlighting the severe structural decline in the sector.

Despite this dire situation, the event will take place in one of the country's most expensive tourist destinations, sparking criticism on social media for the stark contrast between official rhetoric and the widespread crisis.

The congress also coincides with the 55th anniversary of the organizing center. However, there has been no information yet on whether foreign delegations will attend or if the severe production and food security issues facing the island will be addressed.

Meanwhile, Cubans continue to grapple with chronic protein shortages and exorbitant meat prices on the black market, while the government opts to discuss “livestock sustainability” from the air-conditioned halls of Varadero.
