Amidst Cuba's ongoing health crisis, authorities in Matanzas have raised concerns about the potential presence of the influenza A(H3N2) virus on the island. This follows an alert issued by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) regarding a resurgence of the virus in several parts of the world.

The provincial newspaper, Girón, highlighted that while there hasn't been an increase in Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) within Matanzas, experts are emphasizing the importance of "continuous monitoring" due to the threat of the virus entering the region.

According to the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology, a total of 2,946 ARI patients have been treated so far. This figure is noticeably lower than previous weeks and represents 900 fewer cases compared to the same period in 2024.

"We are closely monitoring severe cases admitted to hospitals and any respiratory outbreaks. At border points, such as airports, fever detection is being conducted through temperature scanners. We have received an alert from PAHO, which has been forwarded to the municipalities," stated Andrés Lamas Acevedo, director of the provincial center.

Lamas further explained that the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) is maintaining regular communication with Matanzas health authorities regarding the potential introduction of the virus into the country.

This announcement surfaces amidst a severe epidemiological crisis across the island.

Despite the challenging epidemiological landscape, officials report a decline in fever cases associated with arboviruses in Matanzas, with only 150 cases recorded in the past week, 21 fewer than the previous week.

Additionally, the positivity rate for dengue tests has also decreased, as confirmed by provincial health authorities.

They also note that vigilance continues over hepatitis A outbreaks in the province.
