Cuban journalist Manuel Rodríguez Salas, who once led the "Noticiero Dominical" and played an integral role in the Cuban Television news system, passed away in Havana this Wednesday, as reported by his colleagues through a condolence note.
The shared messages express that the "journalistic community mourns" his loss and extend heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, particularly highlighting fellow journalist Liudmila Talancón, Rodríguez's wife.
Rodríguez Salas is fondly remembered in these tributes as both a "remarkable reporter" and a "wonderful human being."
He spent 25 years working in journalism in Pinar del Río, from 1975 to 2000, where he recounted personal experiences involving coverage and encounters with dictator Fidel Castro, especially during hurricane-related events and public activities.
In one of his reflective writings, he shared, "I had the privilege of being alongside Fidel on five to seven occasions, most of which were during hurricanes." He recalled a late 1975 episode at a baseball game in the Capitán San Luis and another during a hurricane that wreaked havoc in La Coloma. He also mentioned a meeting at the Palacio de las Convenciones during a UPEC plenary session in March 1986, where he discussed the working conditions for journalists in the province.
Upon learning of his passing, his friend José Manuel Valido wrote, "I just found out that my friend and journalist Manuel Rodríguez Salas (Manolo) has passed away. We met in the 1990s and shared many duties within the Cuban Television News System."
Valido acknowledged this as a "tragic and significant loss for Cuban journalism. My deepest condolences and hugs go to my friend Liudmila Talancón, his daughter, and all his family, friends, and colleagues."
In recent months, the Cuban broadcasting world also mourned the loss of René Luis Romero Oramas, a prominent voice of Radio Reloj. His friends and coworkers confirmed his passing. He was known for his distinctive voice and served as the president of the Artistic Council at the station.
Romero began his career at 16 in his home province of Matanzas, at Radio 26. Following various career explorations, he returned to broadcasting with Radio Reloj. For over 14 years, he was one of the main voices waking millions of Cubans during the morning program.
While the cause of death was not disclosed, the news deeply saddened his colleagues, who expressed their grief on social media, recalling Romero Oramas as a dedicated and passionate radio professional.
