Young Man Detained for Attempted Assault on 63-Year-Old Woman in Hialeah Apartment Complex

A 21-year-old man, identified as Luis Antonio Rodas Martínez, was apprehended in Hialeah after being accused of attempting to sexually assault a 63-year-old woman in the shared laundry room of a residential building.

The assault, which took place in the early hours of December 9, has shocked the local community and reignited discussions about safety in common areas of multi-family complexes throughout South Florida.

According to police reports, as cited by local media, Rodas Martínez, a resident of the area originally from Honduras, entered the laundry facility where the woman was doing her laundry.

Armed with a knife, he cornered her against a washing machine, threatening her with the weapon placed menacingly against her torso, and began to pull down her pants with the apparent intention of sexually assaulting her.

The victim told the police that the assailant ignored her pleas and offer of money.

“If you want money, I can give you money, just leave me alone,” she reportedly said to the attacker, but he responded that what he wanted was "this," while continuing his attempt to subdue her sexually.

The situation escalated further when the young man completely immobilized her.

“He had her pinned against the washing machines with a knife near her face and her pants slightly down,” described a neighbor who heard her cries for help and rushed to the scene.

It was this intervention that ultimately disrupted the assault.

The attacker, upon being discovered, released the victim and fled the scene.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Hialeah Police responded to the emergency call shortly before 2:40 a.m. and, after interviewing the victim and the witness, began an investigation with the assistance of surveillance cameras from the complex.

The footage enabled officers to identify the suspect as a local resident.

Based on this evidence, investigators showed a photograph of the individual to one of his brothers, who confirmed his identity.

The police then conducted an undercover operation and successfully arrested him on the night of Sunday, December 14, at an apartment near West Okeechobee Road and Red Road.

Rodas Martínez was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK), where he remains held without bail.

He faces serious charges, including attempted sexual assault with a weapon causing severe bodily injury, armed kidnapping, and aggravated assault.

While the victim's identity is being withheld to protect her privacy, she has told local media that her life has drastically changed since the attack.

“I'm afraid to leave my house,” she confessed to Univision, highlighting the trauma that such incidents can inflict on victims of sexual violence, particularly those of advanced age.

Although police have indicated there are no reports of similar incidents in the area, they have urged any other potential victims to review the suspect's photograph and report any instances of sexual assault.
