The Miami-Dade County authorities have initiated a comprehensive audit of disability parking permits to curb what they describe as "abusive" usage of these authorizations.

This new measure is effective immediately and will include a review of all permanent and temporary applications issued over the past 24 months.

County Tax Collector Dariel Fernández emphasized the gravity of the process, pointing out that each application is an official state document, thus making any fraudulent activity a serious legal issue.

"Our office is empowered to issue, audit, and revoke fraudulent permits. Detected cases may be forwarded to the prosecutor's office for criminal proceedings," Fernández warned.

The audit will be conducted in partnership with the state, the County Sheriff’s Office, and the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, led by Katherine Fernández Rundle, aiming to identify misuse and penalize those who exploit the system.

According to Florida law, providing false information to obtain a permit is a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by fines of up to $1,000 and potential jail time. Even using someone else's permit can result in a $500 fine.

In Miami-Dade, permanent permits are issued free of charge and are valid for four years, while temporary permits cost $15 and are valid for up to six months. Applicants must provide medical certification, Florida identification, and proof of insurance to qualify.

The county has stressed that this extensive audit is an immediate and thorough action aimed at ensuring disability parking permits are used only by those who genuinely need them, thereby safeguarding the integrity of the system and the spaces reserved for individuals with reduced mobility.
