The Cuban team concluded its participation in the IBA World Boxing Championship held in Dubai with a significantly underwhelming performance, securing only a single bronze medal. This solitary achievement was earned by Arlen López from Guantánamo in the 80 kg category.

According to state-affiliated journalist Guillermo Rodríguez on Facebook, the two-time Olympic champion, Arlen López, was defeated in the semifinals on Thursday by unanimous decision (0-5) against Uzbekistan's Javohir Ummataliyev, the reigning world champion from the World Boxing (WB) tournament in Liverpool.

López, the only Cuban boxer to advance beyond the quarterfinals, struggled to match the pace and effectiveness of his Uzbek opponent, who dominated from the outset. As a result, López exits the competition with a bronze medal, the sole accolade for the Cuban delegation in this edition of the World Championship.

Additional Disappointments for Cuban Boxers

Julio César La Cruz, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time world champion, was defeated 1-4 by Uzbekistan's Turabek Khabibullaev in the 92 kg category, leaving him out of medal contention. La Cruz, one of Cuba's most iconic boxing figures, was unable to impose his style against a more effective opponent who even knocked him down during the bout.

Giorvis Salfrán, also from Guantánamo, competing in the 51 kg division, lost his match to Armenia's Ruldolf Garboyan and failed to reach the semifinals. Salfrán was unable to break through his opponent's defense and rhythm, leaving him just short of the podium.

In the super heavyweight category, Santiago's Fernando Arzola (+92 kg) was defeated by unanimous decision (0-5) against Uzbekistan's Arman Makhanof, despite delivering a standing count in the third round. Arzola's efforts were insufficient against the opponent's final push and the judges' decision.

This outcome represents another setback for Cuban boxing, which has historically dominated international competitions but has seen its global prominence wane in recent years. As the tournament concludes, Cuba returns home facing more questions than victories.
