A Cuban woman who was deported from the United States has taken to social media to share her experience regarding what happens to personal belongings when someone is detained by U.S. immigration authorities, known as ICE.
In a video uploaded to her TikTok account (@aleagaastry0), she detailed that upon detention, immigration officers confiscate all personal items, including clothing, shoes, jewelry, and mobile phones.
"Once you're detained, they will take everything from you—jewelry, clothes, shoes, phone... everything will be stored and returned to you on the day you're released," she stated.
However, she cautioned that there have been instances where personal items have gone missing, advising against wearing or carrying valuable items to immigration appointments.
"I've seen many cases where things go missing. It does happen. Try not to bring expensive jewelry or valuable items," the Cuban woman advised.
Recently deported back to Cuba, she confirmed that in her case, all her belongings, including her passport, were returned in good condition.
"As someone who was deported, I received my passport intact upon arriving in Cuba. I had absolutely nothing missing, just the visa I used to travel to Nicaragua," she explained.
She also clarified that during detention, immigrants do not have access to their phones or any personal belongings until they are released.
"If you're in a detention center, you won't be given your phone or any personal items until you are set free," she added.
The Cuban's testimony adds to the numerous stories shared by migrants detained by ICE, who report the loss of personal items or delays in the return of documents and belongings upon deportation or release.
