The unexpected passing of Isiel Díaz Vera, a young Cuban, has left the residents of Punta Alegre in the Chambas municipality deeply shaken.

News of his death spread rapidly across the internet through numerous posts from locals in Ciego de Ávila, a province recently hit hard by a surge in viral illnesses and respiratory issues amid Cuba's crumbling healthcare system.

Many have mourned this loss, as Isiel was employed at the Meliá Costa Rey Hotel in Cayo Coco. Photos shared online depict a robust, cheerful young man whose sudden absence has profoundly affected his community.

Yuniel Pérez, a resident of the area, was among the first to report the tragic event. In a heartfelt farewell on Facebook, he expressed, "Waking up to this sorrowful news breaks my heart. Heaven gained a great angel today. You left without saying goodbye."

In the comments, Pérez confirmed that Isiel "passed away from the virus." Others noted that he had developed pneumonia, was "very ill," and ultimately did not survive.

Community Mourning and Event Cancellations in Punta Alegre

Isiel's death occurred last Thursday, and according to a family friend, he had been hospitalized in Morón. The emotional blow led to the cancellation of the local traditional festivities.

"This was a huge shock for everyone, and there's no desire to do anything," shared Facebook user Yuliet Gf. The decision was supported by locals who insisted that the mourning should be respected, as the pain is too great to celebrate.

Comments like "It's a beautiful way to honor our beloved Isiel" and "The festival is about community, and we must respect the mourning for one of our own" reflect the sentiment in the town. Many believe Isiel deserves the utmost respect, as do his parents.

Epidemiological Crisis Acknowledged by the Government

The passing of this young man comes amid a severe health crisis in Cuba, which is grappling with outbreaks of chikungunya and dengue. The Ministry of Public Health has openly recognized these challenges.

Over a hundred individuals are in intensive care due to complications from these diseases, most of whom are under 18. Carilda Peña García, the Deputy Health Minister, admitted that accurate data on infections is unavailable as PCR tests are conducted selectively, with most diagnoses being clinical.

Additionally, authorities admitted that planned fumigation and vector control measures were not executed, complicating efforts to curb the spread of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Due to shortages in fuel, insecticides, and equipment, large-scale campaigns are not feasible, leaving much of the population unprotected.

A Healthcare System Unable to Handle the Emergency

The healthcare crisis is compounded by the deterioration of hospital infrastructures, lack of medications, essential resources, and staff shortages. Under these conditions, treatable conditions like pneumonia or viral infections pose severe threats to many Cubans.

The death of Isiel Díaz Vera—a young, active, and well-loved member of his community—hits particularly hard in a society already grappling with uncertainty and vulnerability. Meanwhile, the government continues to blame citizens for the mosquito's spread without providing the necessary resources to combat the epidemic.

In Punta Alegre and throughout Ciego de Ávila, the sorrow from this loss is compounded by growing fear over an uncontrolled and resource-strapped epidemiological crisis.
