Cuban Political Prisoner Yosvany Rosell García in Critical Condition with Kidney Failure After 37-Day Hunger Strike

Yosvany Rosell García Caso, a Cuban political prisoner, is in a critical state suffering from acute kidney failure after a 37-day hunger strike. This alarming situation was reported by his wife, Mailin Rodríguez Sánchez, on social media this past Friday.

García, a father of three, has been refusing solid food for over a month. This protest is in response to the harsh conditions of his imprisonment and the Cuban regime's refusal to reassess his case. He was convicted for his involvement in the July 11, 2021 (11J) protests.

"The medical report today at 7 a.m. indicates a critical condition with kidney failure due to the state of his urine and other symptoms we've been reporting. Every second counts because his life is at great risk," Sánchez shared from San Pedro, Costa Rica, where she has sought intervention from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (CIDH).

The activist's wife expressed her frustration over the lack of action from both Cuban authorities and international bodies. She questioned, "What must happen for this human being to be saved? This family is in turmoil, suffering, and dying inside. I plead for a miracle, for protection for my husband, and for help to end this anguish that's destroying us."

Desperate Plea for Justice

Sánchez also criticized the silence of Cuban judicial institutions, accusing them of being "blind, deaf, and mute to human suffering." She added, "I have lost faith in justice. If anything happens to my husband and my children suffer, I will not be able to control myself."

Detained during the 11J protests in Holguín, Yosvany Rosell García Caso was sentenced to 30 years in prison for "public disorder and contempt." This harsh sentence, the longest handed out in connection with the 11J events, is viewed by human rights organizations as politically motivated.

Human Rights Organizations Demand Action

Since his imprisonment, García has reported abuse, isolation, and a lack of medical care, which led to his hunger strike starting in late October. Although his sentence was later reduced by half following an appeal, his situation remains dire.

The Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) and Prisoners Defenders have raised concerns that his condition represents a blatant violation of the right to life and personal integrity. They are urgently calling for his immediate release on humanitarian grounds.
