Nearly a month after Hurricane Melissa’s destructive path through eastern Cuba, the El Cobre Sanctuary—home to Cuba's revered Patroness, the Virgin of Charity—has regained some of its former glory due to the diligent efforts of national heritage restorers and workers.

Recent photos released by the Office of the Historian in Havana and shared on Facebook by the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba, depict an inspiring and heartening process: the resurrection of a marble angel, once guarding the temple's rear entrance and toppled by the storm's wrath, is underway, piece by piece.

When Melissa unleashed its fury on Santiago de Cuba last October, it left a trail of destruction impacting homes, roads, and sites of significant spiritual value.

The Angel's Fall and Rise

One of the most striking damages was the fall of this angel, a longstanding symbol of protection and faith that had watched over the Sanctuary from its stone pedestal for decades.

Today, the disseminated images highlight specialists meticulously reassembling the fractured marble, cleaning each fragment with precision, and restoring the statue's form. For many believers, it embodies the resilient spirit of the Cuban people and their unwavering faith.

"We are unwavering in our restoration of the heritage assets of the Mother of all Cubans," states the Office of the Historian, showcasing the progress in recovery efforts.

Restoration and Resilience

Situated on a hill approximately 18 kilometers from Santiago de Cuba, the El Cobre Sanctuary sustained minor structural damage along with impacts on several sculptures and stained glass windows, according to initial reports.

Nevertheless, its restoration has been prioritized by cultural and religious authorities, recognizing the profound value this site holds in the nation's heart.

The angel's return to the Sanctuary symbolizes more than a physical repair; it stands as a beacon of hope amid crisis.

In times when Cuban faith and identity seem challenged by scarcity and adversity, witnessing the angel rise once more over the El Cobre gardens powerfully reminds us that Cuba, like its people, always finds a way to stand tall again.
