Community Kindness Brings New Bed to Elderly Woman Amidst Cuba's Struggles

Saturday, November 22, 2025 by Sophia Martinez

Amid the ongoing crisis in Cuba, acts of solidarity continue to highlight the compassionate spirit of its people.

Dr. Lisbet Hernández, who spearheads the Solidaridad project in Bayamo, shared a touching story of hope and dedication: a brand-new bed was delivered to Grandma Masita, an elderly woman who had been sleeping on the floor after losing everything.

On November 17th, Hernández took to Facebook to request assistance in transporting donations from Jiguaní and Guisa to Bayamo. "There are about 19 families who have lost everything; they have nowhere to sleep, nothing to eat, not even potable water. Let us come together to help them," she wrote, appealing to the generosity of the community.

Within hours, a wave of support poured in, with individuals offering money, clothes, cribs, and personal beds. Among the contributors were Arletys Causó Morejón, who donated 2,000 pesos; Yusimi Rodríguez Meriño, who gave 8,000; Aliannis Chaveco, who offered a crib and two beds; and Idalmis Martí, who contributed another crib.

"May God bless you with abundance," the doctor expressed in gratitude.

Reaching the Goal

This past Thursday, Hernández joyfully announced that the mission was accomplished: Grandma Masita had received her new bed and mattress.

A video shared later captures the team's determination as they maneuvered the bed through muddy paths, rivers, and rickety bridges. “We faced many challenges, but we reached these families' homes. They welcomed us with immense warmth. We visited from the first house to the last, that of Grandma Masita, bringing her bed so she no longer sleeps on the ground,” the doctor recounted.

Hernández extended her thanks to the Destilería de Mabay for providing the truck, the driver who accompanied them, the CCS Manuel Ascunce Domenech cooperative, and all the local residents who aided them along the way.

"To my neighbors, family, and all the donors, a thousand thanks. Share this so more people can join our project and we can continue to help," she wrote.

Solidarity in Times of Need

The actions of the Solidaridad group in Bayamo illustrate that even in times of scarcity, empathy and unity can overcome any shortage.

Grandma Masita's story is not unique. Amid the island's challenges, various forms of civic solidarity have gained momentum recently. A campaign successfully raised three million pesos for a single mother in Holguín raising four children, following an outpouring of support from thousands moved by her situation.

Meanwhile, in another heartening effort, a group of young barbers in Holguín provided free haircuts to children, the elderly, and vulnerable individuals, showing that even the simplest actions can become meaningful acts of dignity and community care.

The Catholic Church has also stepped up its humanitarian efforts, distributing food and basic supplies to those affected by the recent hurricane in areas where official aid has yet to arrive.
