The Cuban government has conceded the failure of its housing initiative that utilized shipping containers as a solution to the island's severe housing shortage, a plan initially touted as an "alternative solution" by the communist regime months ago.
In a thread shared on the social media platform X, Cuba's official government account admitted that despite releasing over a thousand containers, progress has been hindered by delays in converting these structures into livable homes.
"Although more than 1,700 used containers have been released, the slow pace of extracting and transforming them limits the potential of this construction solution," stated the government account, referencing conclusions from a national videoconference meeting.
The session was led by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, who also acknowledged shortcomings in other essential services, including waste collection, public lighting maintenance, green area upkeep, and funeral services.
"There has been a lack of oversight and enforcement of approved regulations," Marrero confessed, urging for greater "sensitivity and promptness" in responding to public grievances.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the country's epidemiological situation and the assistance needed for provinces hit by Hurricane Melissa, which caused significant damage to infrastructure and homes.
