An early morning traffic accident on Saturday at the intersection of Juan Bruno Zayas and Lacret in Havana's Diez de Octubre district once again shed light on the rampant traffic violations that lead to frequent mishaps in the city.
The incident was reported in the Facebook group "ACCIDENTES BUSES & CAMIONES por más experiencia y menos víctimas!" where user Eduardo González Ledo shared initial images and details of the collision.
The crash involved a truck and a Dodge vehicle, commonly known as a "pisicorre." Photographs reveal significant damage to the latter.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver failed to heed the STOP sign, triggering the collision at an intersection many locals regard as a traffic hotspot in Havana.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation of injuries, although residents emphasize that similar incidents are not uncommon at this location.
"Truly horrifying things happen at that corner," remarked an online commentator, noting that Lacret is a priority street while Juan Bruno Zayas has STOP signs in both directions and is generally considered to have good visibility.
"But, well, that's the situation," the comment continued, highlighting the public's frustration.
Another user pointed out that the intersection once had a flashing traffic light, and its removal, coupled with Juan Bruno Zayas's width, misleadingly suggests it has the right of way.
"Add in the negligence of some drivers who don't pay attention to signs, and you get a disaster," they emphasized.
Numerous comments echoed similar sentiments, criticizing the lack of accountability among drivers. Many insisted that a disregard for basic traffic rules perpetuates these dangerous scenarios with alarming regularity.
