A serious accident early Monday morning in the municipality of Venezuela, located in Ciego de Ávila, resulted in injuries to 27 individuals. Among the injured were workers from the Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS) El Fortín, who were involved in solidarity efforts to aid eastern provinces in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, as reported by Invasor.

According to posts on social media from the official media outlet and Avileña Television, the Girón bus carrying the cooperative members collided with a cart around 5:40 a.m. in the area known as La Caoba, part of the Simón Reyes Popular Council.

The injured were part of a group that has been actively sending food and agricultural products to Santiago de Cuba and Holguín. They were on their way to continue their regular duties when the accident occurred.

Dr. Inés Padrón González, head of the Emergency Service at the Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial Hospital, stated that 20 patients received treatment at the facility. Three of these patients are in critical condition—two with severe cranial trauma and one with a closed abdominal injury accompanied by free fluid in the cavity. The remaining individuals sustained orthopedic injuries and minor contusions.

Community Efforts and Tragic Setback

The accident has caused shock throughout Ciego de Ávila, a province that has been actively participating in the "Fuerza Oriente" campaign since late October, sending essential goods such as food, clothing, and materials to the areas most affected by Hurricane Melissa.

The CCS El Fortín, alongside companies like 'La Cuba' and 'Ceballos', has played a crucial role in these recovery efforts, contributing tons of agricultural products.

Now, the workers who were once offering help to others find themselves in need of support and hope. Provincial authorities, led by Julio Gómez Casanova and Alfredo Menéndez, have been stationed at the hospital to oversee the medical care of the injured.

CiberCuba will continue to provide updates on the health status of the cooperative members and the progress of the accident investigation.
