An early morning traffic accident on Monday in the La Caoba community, part of Simón Reyes Popular Council in the Venezuela municipality of Ciego de Ávila, resulted in an initial count of 27 injured individuals, according to local media and hospital sources.

The crash occurred around 5:40 a.m. when a Girón bus collided with a cart carrying workers from the El Fortín Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS) in the same municipality.

Initial reports from Avileña Television and Invasor Newspaper indicated that 24 of the injured were taken to the local polyclinic, while three individuals with severe injuries were directly transported to the Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial Hospital in the capital of Ciego de Ávila.

Three Patients in Critical Condition

Dr. Inés Padrón González, an Intensive Care and Emergency specialist and head of the Emergency Services at the provincial hospital, confirmed that 20 patients had been received so far, cautioning that “not all cases have arrived yet.”

The doctor detailed that three of the injured are in life-threatening condition: two with severe head injuries and one with a closed abdominal trauma and free fluid in the cavity, likely requiring surgical intervention.

“The remaining patients are reported to be stable,” Dr. Padrón added. “Orthopedic injuries such as elbow, knee, and foot contusions, as well as simple wounds, are being treated by minor surgery specialists.”

Several injured individuals with minor bruises and abrasions remain at the Venezuela Polyclinic. A severely injured patient with a pelvic fracture and free fluid in the cavity is under medical observation, pending further surgical evaluation.

Local Authorities Monitor the Situation

At the Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial Hospital, Ciego de Ávila authorities, led by Julio Gómez Casanova, the Communist Party’s first secretary in the province, and Alfredo Menéndez, the governor, are closely overseeing the medical care provided to the injured, as reported by Avileña Television.

The accident, involving a state-run mass transit vehicle and an animal-drawn cart, occurred in a rural area where poor road conditions and low visibility during early morning hours may have contributed to the incident. However, the causes are still under investigation.

CiberCuba continues to gather information on this developing accident and will update details as new medical reports or official investigation results become available.
