Cuban actor Luis Alberto García expressed both sarcasm and outrage in response to the official announcement that former Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Alejandro Gil Fernández is set to face trial for a list of charges that could be ripped from a high-level corruption thriller.

"Otzea... he was a MINISTER," García jested on his Facebook page, highlighting with irony the significance of Gil's role, a once omnipresent figure in the regime's Round Tables and special broadcasts.

The Attorney General's Office stated that Gil Fernández will be prosecuted for a slew of offenses, including espionage, embezzlement, bribery, money laundering, tax evasion, influence peddling, forgery of public documents, violation of classified document regulations, theft, and damage to property in official custody, among other "acts detrimental to economic activity or contracting."

Adding to this list, Luis Alberto García accused: "The fundamental one is missing: LYING. LYING. LYING."

Criticism Aimed at the Political System

The actor didn't stop at the scandal but directed his criticism toward the political machinery that elevated and maintained Gil in power:

"Who put him in those positions? Where did the PCC's Cadre School graduate him from?"

With biting sarcasm, he continued:

"It’s astonishing the seriousness and composure with which 'the comrade' confronted us Cubans, claiming he, his boss, and the entire state clan were outsmarting William Vivanco."

Recalling the numerous television appearances where Gil defended the government's economic policies, García posed another scathing question:

"Does the famous oath, signed with pomp and circumstance on live television by public officials, hold any value?"

The Question of Institutional Oversight

Using a play on words, the actor mocked the notion that Gil Fernández acted alone: "One would have to be 'very gullible' to believe that this man was the sole rotten apple."

The prominent Cuban actor challenged the lack of institutional and media oversight:

"Did the great national investigative journalism ever suspect anything? Did any deputy ever question the Finance Czar's arguments?"

State of Decay

García concluded his critique with a Shakespearean reference:

"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark," he quoted from Hamlet, casting his irony on the official narrative:

"Good thing this isn't a failed state!" he remarked sarcastically.

"Thank goodness it's the opinion matrices modeled on the networks by the enemy that try to discredit it!" he concluded.

Luis Alberto García's sharp commentary quickly went viral, garnering over 700 comments, many applauding his incisiveness.

Background on the Gil Fernández Case

On Friday, the Cuban Prosecutor's Office formally charged Alejandro Gil Fernández following an investigation initiated months earlier due to "serious errors."

Gil had been ousted in February and resigned from the Communist Party and his position as a deputy in March.

The judicial process unfolds as Cuba's economy endures one of its toughest periods in decades, plagued by shortages, power outages, and the collapse of basic services.

Ironically, it was Gil himself who announced in December 2023 that food production targets would not be met and admitted the failure of the "Ordering Task."
