Crash Details

The helicopter went down around 12:30 p.m. in a wooded area near Highway 43 and Natchez Trace Parkway. The University confirmed the fatalities in a statement, saying, "The AirCare helicopter crash in northern Madison County on Monday took the lives of two University of Mississippi Medical Center care team members and the Med-Trans pilot." Known as AirCare 3 and based in Columbus, the helicopter had been en route back to Columbus after a medical transport mission, but the identities of those on board are being withheld to protect family privacy.

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs at the University of Mississippi, expressed her sorrow over the tragic event. "You never know what a day will bring, and today has been an awful tragedy and loss for the Medical Center family," she remarked. "Our hearts go out to the families, and we deeply grieve with them. The entire Medical Center family is heartbroken by this. We also extend our condolences and support to the AirCare team."

Our state will never forget the sacrifice of these heroes."

Recent Surge in Air Accidents in the U.S.

This incident adds to a concerning pattern of recent air accidents in the United States, affecting both military and civilian sectors. On January 29, a commercial plane and an Army helicopter collided near the capital, resulting in 67 fatalities. In Alaska, a small passenger aircraft crash on February 7 claimed ten lives. February 10 saw another tragic event at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona, where a private plane collided with another aircraft on the runway, killing one and injuring several others.

Further incidents include a U.S. Navy E/A-18G Growler crash in San Diego Bay on February 12, where both crew members ejected safely. On February 15, a Rockwell Commander plane crash at Covington Municipal Airport in Georgia resulted in two deaths. February 19 witnessed a mid-air collision between two single-engine planes at Marana Regional Airport in Arizona, claiming at least two lives. A near-miss occurred on February 25 at Chicago's Midway International Airport when a Southwest Airlines flight had to abort landing due to a Flexjet private jet encroaching its path.
