A 35-year-old Cuban Uber driver, identified as Yaroslandys Elozegui Romero, was taken into custody on Monday in Miami-Dade County. He faces charges of coercing a passenger into engaging in sexual acts by the roadside, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The victim recounted to authorities that she had requested an Uber ride from a friend's house and was picked up by Romero, according to details shared by Local 10. During the ride, the victim asked to use a phone charger, and following the driver's instructions, she moved to the front seat to access it.
At this juncture, Romero, who is reportedly a recent arrival in Miami as noted by América TeVé, began to touch her and attempted to kiss her, becoming increasingly aggressive when she resisted. Romero then stopped the vehicle along the shoulder of State Road 826 near LeJeune Road. There, he removed his pants and exposed himself to the victim, forcing her into sexual acts. Afterward, Romero masturbated, cleaned himself with a towel, and drove the victim to her final destination.
Authorities stated that Romero claimed the victim appeared intoxicated, yet officers found no evidence of intoxication. Romero is now facing several charges, including felony sexual battery, misdemeanor battery, and indecent exposure.
During a court appearance on Monday, Romero's bail was set at $29,000. Judge Ariel Rodríguez expressed deep concern over the "extremely troubling allegations" and warned, "This individual should not be an Uber or Lyft driver, should not be driving," according to a report from Telemundo Miami. Romero has been ordered to stay away from the victim and is prohibited from working as a ride-share driver.
Uber has permanently banned the driver from its platform and has reiterated its cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
