Lazarito Valdés from Bamboleo in Miami: "I'm Not Political, My Thing Is Making Music"

Tuesday, March 11, 2025 by Alexander Flores

Lazarito Valdés, the leader of the Cuban band Bamboleo, is among the many artists who have left Cuba, choosing to settle in Miami in search of a brighter future for both his family and his music career. During an interview on the podcast Destino Tolk, the contentious issue of Cuban artists in exile taking political stances against the Cuban dictatorship was brought to the forefront, and Lazarito's response was clear.

The host of Destino Positivo hinted that Valdés might be on Alexander Otaola's radar for deportation to the island, akin to artists like Flor de Cuba, El Micha, and Alexander Abreu. In response, Lazarito firmly stated, "I'm not political; I don't get involved in politics. My passion is making music."

Lazarito pondered the expectation for musicians to discuss politics, noting that politicians aren't interviewed about music. "Politics doesn't interest me. I came to the United States because it's the greatest country in the world, and the best music is made here. I arrived eager to expand my skills on the piano and grow as an artist," he elaborated.

Last November, the pianist and musical director confirmed his decision to relocate to the United States during an interview with La Casa de Maka. Reflecting on this move, he mentioned on social media that it was like "a second chance at life."
