On Monday, Cuba's Civil Defense issued a public warning regarding the threats of flooding due to the arrival of a cold front in the western region of the island. The advisory specifically cautioned against the dangers of walking through flooded areas.

The alert, referencing the forecast from the INSMET's Center for Forecasting, anticipates numerous showers, rain, and thunderstorms later in the day. These weather conditions could lead to water accumulation in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Authorities are advising citizens to avoid traversing flooded zones and seek shelter from lightning in safe locations. "If possible, wait for the waters to recede," the statement urged. "Avoid reckless actions; protect your life," the message emphasized, urging the public to exercise caution given the adverse weather conditions.

The Civil Defense alert is reminiscent of a tragic incident last February, when a child was swept away by an open storm drain during severe flooding in Havana, following intense rainfall.

The accident took place at the intersection of Vía Blanca and 10 de Octubre, one of the areas hardest hit by the downpour in the Cuban capital. The heartbreaking event deeply affected the community as friends, family, and neighbors gathered to bid farewell to Jonathan Oliva, the 13-year-old boy who lost his life after being pulled into the drain.
