A police operation in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood resulted in the seizure of 56.5 pounds of marijuana, illegal gaming machines, a firearm, and ammunition. This raid led to the arrests of 25-year-old manager Lisyane Flores and a 15-year-old accused of possessing cannabis with the intent to sell near a school. The bust took place at El Rincón Market & Smoke Shop, located at Northwest 35th Avenue and 7th Street in Miami.
The investigation began months earlier following a stabbing incident near the establishment. During the subsequent police response, officers detected irregularities prompting a deeper dive into the business’s activities.
Undercover Investigation Reveals Illegal Activities
According to Mike Vega, Miami Police spokesperson, an undercover officer was able to purchase marijuana at the shop without issue. "This all started months ago when there was a stabbing in front of this establishment, and when officers arrived, they noticed things that didn’t seem right," Vega stated. "With the information gathered, we obtained a search and arrest warrant. Upon arriving yesterday, we discovered marijuana and also a locked room containing illegal machines." The SWAT team involved in the raid also found cannabis-infused gummies and chocolates.
Inside the secret room, authorities uncovered traces of consumed drugs, a firearm, ammunition, and empty alcohol bottles. "Alcohol consumption is not permitted at this establishment, and we arrested the owner and a 15-year-old related to the establishment's owner," Vega detailed.
Concerns Over Youth and Cannabis Legality
One of the primary concerns for authorities is the shop's proximity to Green Springs High School, which may have enabled cannabis sales to minors. "Most of the people entering the establishment are kids going to school. We’re not saying all are purchasing marijuana, but they are exposed to its use," explained the police spokesperson.
The school principal confirmed that the 15-year-old arrested is a student at the school and expressed concern over the incident. He also thanked local law enforcement for their swift action.
Meanwhile, Lisyane Flores' attorney, Lawrence Hashish, defended her, arguing that the cannabis found in the store was legal. "The cannabis found is THC-A, which is permitted by law. This is a tobacco store, and everything is displayed, packaged, and certified," he asserted. However, police noted that not all seized products were commercially packaged, as vacuum-sealed bags were also found near the store’s office.
Detective Matthew Martinez from the Miami Police disclosed that laboratory results from undercover purchases showed higher THC levels than permissible, ranging from 7% to 22%.
Illegal Gaming Machines and Bail Hearing
The investigation also revealed a hidden back room with six gaming machines, resulting in additional charges against those responsible for the store. "The mere possession of a gaming machine. The PC doesn’t state if anyone played or won or received money," argued attorney Hashish in defense of his client.
Following her court appearance, Flores was charged with cannabis trafficking, possession of a gaming device, and contributing to a minor's delinquency. A judge set her bail at $8,500. Meanwhile, the 15-year-old faces charges for cannabis possession with intent to sell near a school.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and have not ruled out further arrests related to the illicit operation at the establishment.
