The U.S. Embassy in Cuba may proceed with the humanitarian visa process for Cuban child Damir Ortiz, who suffers from an incurable illness that cannot be treated on the island. Activist Diasniurka Salcedo, who has been closely following the case, confirmed that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reached out to Damir's godmother to request additional documents, offering a glimmer of hope for the visa process to continue. The family is working diligently to gather the necessary paperwork to expedite the humanitarian visa application, as the young boy's health remains in a critical state.

Eliannis Ramírez, Damir's mother, continues to appeal to the international community and U.S. authorities for her son to access the urgent medical care he needs. A Miami hospital has volunteered to take on his case.

The Struggle of a Mother for Her Son's Life

In early February, Ramírez posted a desperate message on social media, highlighting her son's deteriorating health and the lack of resources in Cuba to treat him. "Damir is dying, he is dying. Help, please, help," she pleaded on her Facebook profile, sparking a wave of solidarity both on and off the island.

Ten-year-old Damir suffers from neurofibromatosis type 1, which has caused paralysis in his legs, partial blindness, and tumors in his spine. Although a Miami hospital agreed to treat him, obtaining a humanitarian visa is necessary to transfer him.

However, the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) refused to issue the documentation required by the U.S. Embassy, claiming that the country had the resources to treat the child. Consequently, the humanitarian visa application was denied on February 6.

Fundraising Efforts and New Visa Challenges

In their quest for the visa, Cuban activists and Damir's mother launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover potential travel expenses. The initiative successfully raised over $30,000, but was halted due to the platform's policies on international donations. Salcedo recently noted that they continue to send data and documents to resume fundraising efforts in support of Damir and his family. The Cuban activists remain steadfast in their mission to help this child leave the island and regain his health in the United States.

Protests Near the U.S. Embassy

On February 26, a group of activists demonstrated in front of the U.S. Embassy in Havana to demand priority for Damir's visa. The area was heavily guarded by police, and several protesters, including activist Lara Crofs, were detained. Despite the crackdown, the activists are still pursuing alternative ways for Damir to receive the treatment he desperately needs.
