Social media users and the family of a missing woman in the border city of Tapachula, Mexico are urgently seeking assistance to find her. Dairanis Tan Ramos, a mother of two originally from Vertientes, Camagüey, was last seen on December 18 in Tapachula, according to her family's posts on social media. Those close to Dairanis revealed that she had arrived in Mexico on December 9 and was heading to Mexico City from Tapachula, but she has not been heard from since.
Dairanis's mother is pleading for help and urging anyone with information to contact the family in Cuba. "Please, I know how much this mother is suffering without news of her daughter. If anyone in Tapachula has seen her or knows anything, please reach out to her family. May God intervene and bring some news. She was traveling with a group of 13 people heading to Mexico City," shared a close friend of Dairanis online.
A cousin of the young woman added, "She had a guide, who also disappeared. There were 13 people in the boat." Amid the severe Cuban migration crisis, there have been reports of kidnappings and disappearances of Cubans attempting to reach Mexico's northern border to enter the United States. During their journey through Mexico, Cubans often fall victim to scams and abductions by so-called "coyotes," who promise to smuggle them to the border in exchange for money.
Last year, the Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo issued a search alert for Imilsis María Arjona Medina, a 34-year-old Cuban woman who went missing for several days. She was eventually "located," although Mexican authorities did not specify the conditions under which she was found. Arjona Medina had last been seen in Cancún on December 19, but no further details about her disappearance were released. The alert was closed ten days later.
Additionally, at the beginning of this year, two young men disappeared during a maritime journey near Mexico's coast. Alexander Valdés Valdés, 29, and Raúl Valdés Valdés, 21, were last seen on January 5, 2025, adrift after a shipwreck near Cancún while attempting a perilous migration from Cuba. The pair were part of a group of nine who left Cuba on December 24, 2024, from La Coloma, Pinar del Río.
After several days, the group paused at a cay for four days before continuing to Mexico. Their boat collided with another vessel, resulting in a shipwreck. Though seven others were rescued by a yacht, the two young men drifted away and were reportedly aided by another boat, but no further information has surfaced about them.
