Geraldo Ulises Camellón Fernández, a Cuban resident of West Palm Beach, found himself in legal trouble after allegedly stealing a Mercedes Benz from Miami International Airport. His desperate attempt came as he tried to retrieve his forgotten passport to catch a flight to Cuba.
Camellón arrived at the airport planning to fly to Havana. However, upon reaching the airline counter, he realized his Cuban passport was left in his car. As he rushed to retrieve it, he discovered his vehicle had been towed due to improper parking.
In a frantic bid to make his flight, he reportedly stole a Mercedes Benz parked nearby and began tailing another car in an attempt to exit the airport swiftly. "He saw a Mercedes parked outside, had no passport, and took the car. He stole it to quickly fetch the passport," the prosecution stated during a court hearing this Wednesday.
The situation escalated when a woman reported that the Mercedes Benz was aggressively following her from the airport parking lot. She informed police that the driver was performing dangerous maneuvers to stay behind her on the road.
Law enforcement attempted to stop the vehicle driven by the Cuban man. Despite activating their emergency lights, Camellón Fernández ignored their signals and continued driving for five blocks before police reinforcements intercepted him.
When questioned about his actions, the accused explained, "I was following the lady in the other car because I didn't know how to exit the airport."
The incident took a more serious turn when authorities searched the vehicle and discovered a firearm in a bag on the passenger seat. "That's grounds for holding him without bail," the prosecution declared during the hearing.
Camellón Fernández was taken to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, where he explained that he attempted to board his flight by showing a photo of his passport, but the airline denied him boarding.
During the hearing, Judge Mindy S. Glazer inquired if the Cuban man was employed, to which he replied, "Not at the moment." Without the means to hire a private attorney, he was assigned a public defender.
The Cuban national faces charges of armed robbery and evading authorities. Bail has been denied as the legal proceedings against him continue. América Noticias noted that the young Cuban also has a pending immigration order. He is set to appear in court again this Friday.
