José Daniel Ferrer: A Beacon of Hope in Santiago de Cuba

José Daniel Ferrer, a prominent opposition figure and leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), remains steadfast in his humanitarian efforts in Santiago de Cuba, providing essential assistance and meals to those who are most vulnerable. Through a heartfelt post on Facebook, Ferrer shared how he, alongside his family and with the help of compassionate citizens, managed to feed over 260 individuals in need on Thursday. "Today, we served meals to more than 260 vulnerable people. We even shared our own afternoon food, saving only what was necessary for our child. The adults will have bread and banana smoothies. What a beautiful chain of solidarity among Cubans, both at home and abroad!" he expressed.

Ferrer emphasized the spontaneous donations they have received, ranging from soda vendors to those selling vinegar, as well as firewood contributions from some of those who have benefited from their aid. "Solidarity and service are critically needed in these times of severe crisis," he underscored.

This selfless work is not new for Ferrer. On February 14, he and his wife, Dr. Nelva Ismaray Ortega, also attended to dozens of people facing hardships. In a message posted on X, Ferrer detailed how they balance their humanitarian activities with family life, despite the obstacles imposed by the regime. "While my wife, Dr. Nelva Ismaray Ortega, cares for patients and other matters, I attend to dozens of individuals daily: relatives of political prisoners, calls from both political and common prisoners, activists who are victims of repression or face other serious issues. Despite the many challenges the regime throws our way, we lovingly care for our son. I'm making him a puree of taro, which is quite expensive, by the way," he remarked.

Before his imprisonment, Ferrer was already engaged in these charitable activities, often facing threats and harassment from the regime. During the pandemic, authorities attempted to shut down his humanitarian work, but he steadfastly refused to halt his efforts. The State Security has even gone so far as to block people from accessing aid distribution points in an attempt to curtail his impact on the community.

Ferrer was released on January 16 after spending three and a half years behind bars. His release was part of a broader agreement involving the Cuban regime, the Vatican, and the United States, which promised the gradual release of 553 political prisoners—a process that has been put on hold since Cuba's re-listing as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Despite his release, Ferrer continues to face harassment from the communist authorities. On January 27, he defied a police summons in Santiago de Cuba, stating he would not obey the order and that prison does not intimidate him. Furthermore, in February, he was once again summoned by the People's Municipal Court of Santiago de Cuba, to which he responded by refusing to acknowledge the court and expressing his willingness to face the consequences of his defiance.

Ferrer has also reported constant surveillance by the political police, including the use of drones to monitor his home in Santiago de Cuba. Despite these intimidations, he reaffirms his dedication to the fight for human rights and the well-being of the Cuban people.

In the face of government repression and numerous challenges, Ferrer and his wife persist in their mission, fortifying a network of solidarity that stands strong against the crisis enveloping the Cuban populace.
