For the second time in less than two years, a Cuban woman residing in Miami has been arrested for running an unlicensed post-surgery recovery house. Mónica Beatriz García, along with her 24-year-old daughter Laura García, faces charges for managing a facility without the necessary authorization, aimed at assisting patients recovering from cosmetic surgeries.
“These centers are functioning without the state of Florida's licensing, and in addition, many individuals working there lack the proper training and certification required for patient care, unlike a doctor or nurse," Ángel Rodríguez, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, told Telemundo 51. He reminded that García faced similar charges in 2023.
Authorities reported that García was charging patients hundreds of dollars daily for recovery services without holding a valid license. Furthermore, she improperly disposed of medical waste, such as blood-stained gowns, without using biohazard containers.
Rodríguez highlighted the complexity of the investigation, emphasizing the legal issues involved and, more importantly, the health and safety of patients in such facilities. The business, known as Oasis Retreat Miami, is located in southwest Miami-Dade and offers weekly stays for $2,600, according to its social media profiles.
Back in 2023, Mónica Beatriz García was apprehended for illegally running at least three cosmetic surgery recovery centers in Miami-Dade. These operations included overnight accommodations, 24-hour nursing services, and meals for $250 per night. Police discovered that she personally transported patients from cosmetic surgery centers to the recovery houses, where staff assisted with bathing, dressing, feeding, and administering medications.
During her previous arrest, she denied the accusations. A bond of $21,000 was set, but she was never prosecuted.
