Friday, February 21, 2025 by Joseph Morales

A 50-year-old Cuban national appeared before the Havana Provincial Court charged with drug-related offenses after a parcel addressed to him arrived in Cuba from the Dominican Republic containing cocaine. Authorities indicated he could face up to 30 years in prison.

A report from the state-run television news revealed that the accused, whose identity remains undisclosed, was the recipient of a package concealing 7.9 kilograms of cocaine. This parcel was allegedly sent by "an individual known for narcotics connections" in the Dominican Republic, according to "witnesses with expertise in international cooperation for such cases."

Despite having no prior criminal record, the defendant was subjected to a high-profile trial in the State Security Crime Section of the Havana Provincial People's Court. He could face a sentence ranging from 10 to 30 years for "offenses related to illicit drugs and substances with similar effects."

The report stated that "the verdict will be communicated soon, and the accused can appeal it before the Supreme Court." The news also mentioned the accused has "employment ties," although it did not clarify his occupation.

State television emphasized Cuba's unwavering "zero-tolerance drug policy," prioritizing the "confrontation" of drugs entering the country. There is growing "concern" over the potential influx of drugs via mail services.

The Ministry of the Interior reported on social media platform X that exemplary trials have been conducted this week at the Havana Provincial People's Court against "individuals implicated in illicit drug trafficking," as part of a broader anti-drug prevention and enforcement operation in the capital.

In recent days, authorities have ramped up efforts to combat drug trafficking with operations across several Havana municipalities, resulting in the arrest of dozens for alleged possession of illegal substances and controlled medications.

Cuban authorities also apprehended a passenger at José Martí International Airport in the capital, attempting to enter the country with three kilograms of methamphetamines. Additionally, customs officials at Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport in Matanzas detected electronic cigarettes containing hexahydrocannabinol (HHC), a synthetic cannabinoid with psychoactive effects.
