Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar announced on Tuesday her intention to introduce a legislative proposal aimed at granting permanent legal status in the United States to Cubans holding the I-220A form, also known as the Order of Release on Recognizance.

During a visit to her Miami district this week, Salazar encountered a young Cuban migrant who is currently working and learning English. She assured him that she is working on a bill that would allow individuals in his position to secure permanent residency in the country.

In a post on social media platform X, Salazar emphasized that this measure could provide a much-needed pathway to legalization for many Cuban migrants currently facing legal uncertainty. "Stay tuned!" she urged.

A few weeks ago, immigration lawyer Wilfredo Allen, speaking to Univision, offered reassurance to Cubans with the I-220A status in light of Donald Trump's recent electoral victory. Allen expressed confidence that despite existing concerns, "everyone will be legalized." He acknowledged that while the process may be lengthy, it will ultimately be successful. "I'm not worried. The elephant moves slowly but inevitably," he remarked, highlighting the nature of the legal process.

However, Allen stressed the importance of attending court appointments and avoiding any actions that could jeopardize the process. He cited an example of a Cuban who was deported for missing a court date, warning that failing to appear could result in losing the chance for legalization.

The issue concerning Cubans with the I-220A form remains significant for the migrant community from the island who have arrived in the United States since 2021 and are currently stuck in legal limbo. For years, these immigrants have been advocating for regularization under the Cuban Adjustment Act.

Legal Pathway for Cubans with I-220A Form

What is the I-220A form?

The I-220A form, also known as the Order of Release on Recognizance, is a document issued to some migrants, allowing them to be released from detention under certain conditions while their immigration case is pending.

How can the proposed bill affect Cuban migrants?

If passed, the proposed bill by Congresswoman Salazar could provide a legal pathway for Cuban migrants with the I-220A status to obtain permanent residency in the United States, alleviating their current legal uncertainties.

What should migrants with I-220A do in the meantime?

Migrants holding the I-220A form should diligently attend all court appointments and avoid any legal infractions to maintain their eligibility for potential legalization under new legislative measures.
