Miracle in Granma: Premature Twin Baby Defies Odds and is Discharged from Hospital

Wednesday, February 19, 2025 by Bella Nunez

A premature twin baby, born weighing just 1,100 grams, has triumphed over adversity after spending 94 days in the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Provincial Hospital in Bayamo, Granma. According to a report from the state-run channel CNC TV, the baby's mother was admitted in an emergency on November 10, shortly after strong earthquakes shook the region, with only 28 weeks into her pregnancy.

Due to the urgency, the birth did not occur in the designated delivery room on the fourth floor. Instead, doctors had to set up a makeshift area in the maternity classroom. Amidst the tension, the woman gave birth to two girls, but tragically, only one survived.

The surviving baby, named Eva by her parents, faced severe health challenges, including respiratory complications and an intracranial hemorrhage, necessitating extended use of a ventilator. However, because of a critical shortage of medical equipment, the hospital was forced to share ventilators between both twins.

Despite these obstacles, Eva's positive progress was achieved due to the dedication of the medical staff, highlighting the severe lack of resources plaguing Cuban hospitals. Her mother's testimony, who spent 94 days in the hospital, underscores her gratitude for her daughter's life. "Today, I am very happy. After spending 94 days in this institution, I am leaving with my daughter in good health," she expressed.

This story is reminiscent of other recent medical successes in Cuba, such as baby Jesús Alejandro Rodríguez Espinosa, who underwent surgery at just six hours old in Villa Clara due to a congenital brain malformation. The successful operation allowed him to be discharged and reunited with his family.

Similarly, the first set of triplets born in Villa Clara were released from the hospital after gaining the necessary weight, following a stay of just over a month and a half. Moreover, a baby born at 29 weeks of gestation, along with the mother, survived a challenging delivery at the General Hospital in the municipality of Contramaestre in Santiago de Cuba.
