The plight of Damir Ortiz, a ten-year-old Cuban boy battling neurofibromatosis plexiforme type 1 (NF1), has gained international attention after the Cuban regime attempted to politicize his case. The esteemed Spanish newspaper, El País, has published an article highlighting the dire circumstances faced by Cuban hospitals and the impact on patients with chronic illnesses.

According to the publication, young Damir, who endures the growth of tumors due to his genetic neurological condition, is experiencing worsening health. "As time goes by, Damir Ortiz, aged 10, becomes increasingly ill," the article states.

Despite the tireless efforts of his mother, Eliannis Ramírez, to secure proper medical care abroad, the U.S. Embassy in Havana denied Damir a visa due to missing documents that should have been provided promptly by Cuba's Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP). The officials refused to issue the necessary visa for travel to Miami for treatment at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital because it required an authorization letter from MINSAP. However, the Ministry declined to issue this documentation, asserting that Cuba possesses the resources needed to treat the boy.

This situation has sparked criticism of MINSAP from human rights activists, who argue that bureaucratic hurdles imposed by health authorities impede patients with severe conditions from accessing treatment overseas. The struggle of Damir and his mother has drawn international support, including from figures like Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar, who has joined the call for the child's health.

The article also exposes Damir's critical condition, detailing health complications such as paralysis in his legs, partial blindness, and a tumor affecting his spine. Despite Eliannis's efforts to raise funds for his medical care, the situation remains dire: "I've asked for help everywhere, and no one seems to care. I am desperate," Eliannis Ramírez told the newspaper.

Furthermore, the report underscores that Eliannis "is not the only mother challenging the system or fighting for better care for her children" in a nation once considered a medical powerhouse, now struggling to provide adequate healthcare for children needing cancer treatments or organ transplants. Currently, a GoFundMe account aiming to raise $40,000 for Damir's medical expenses has amassed $31,700.
