A Holland America Line cruise ship, which experienced an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness affecting nearly 170 individuals, docked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Friday. The Rotterdam set sail from the same port on February 2 and successfully completed its planned 12-day voyage despite facing a norovirus outbreak that impacted 152 passengers and 17 crew members.
"I saw people in hazmat-like suits going from room to room, cleaning. I was so sick it took me four days to recover," a passenger who contracted the virus shared with Telemundo 51.
The norovirus is a virus that leads to viral gastroenteritis, also referred to as stomach flu or food poisoning. Common symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain, although fever, headaches, and muscle aches may also occur.
Upon identifying the illness, the cruise line and ship's crew implemented measures such as enhancing cleaning and disinfection efforts, conducting fecal tests on those infected, and isolating affected individuals.
In a statement, Holland America commented that the cases aboard the Rotterdam were mostly mild and resolved swiftly. "Their response was impeccable. They cleaned everything, eliminated self-service at buffets, and managed the outbreak very well," a passenger acknowledged.
Norovirus typically spreads through the consumption of contaminated food. To prevent transmission, thorough handwashing is crucial, and infected individuals should remain isolated and ensure proper hydration.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warn that when such incidents occur on a cruise ship, sick passengers or crew must report any symptoms promptly to detect outbreaks early and take steps to limit the disease's spread.
According to Telemundo 51, this marks the seventh outbreak of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships this year.
