The U.S. Embassy in Havana has issued a warning to American citizens residing in or traveling to Cuba regarding the severe power outages affecting the entire island. In a message posted on its X account, the embassy noted an increase in electrical disruptions across the nation, including in the capital, Havana.

"Cuba's electrical grid is becoming increasingly unstable," the statement highlighted. "Since October 18, 2024, frequent and extended power outages have occurred throughout the country. These include both scheduled and unscheduled blackouts impacting homes, businesses, hospitals, and essential services."

The embassy provided several recommendations, urging individuals to monitor local media, stay updated with the Electric Union notifications, and keep in touch with family and friends. It also advised preparing for prolonged power interruptions by keeping phones and portable batteries charged, having flashlights and spare batteries on hand, stocking up on non-perishable food and water, and having alternative methods for medical devices and refrigerated medications.

Furthermore, the embassy suggested enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates. The energy crisis in Cuba has worsened in recent days, with blackouts exceeding 20 hours daily in several provinces, severely disrupting daily life. The lack of electricity generation, fuel shortages, and constant breakdowns in thermoelectric plants have resulted in extended outages, leaving citizens without power for nearly a full day.

Due to the severity of the situation, classes have been suspended, with students from provincial centers sent home in stages. Additionally, non-essential state institutions have been ordered to close to reduce energy consumption.
