Florida's Governor, Ron DeSantis, enacted a comprehensive set of laws on Thursday aimed at tackling illegal immigration and enhancing mass deportations within the state. "Today, Florida's Legislature has passed the nation's most robust legislation to combat illegal immigration. We are leading the charge to end the illegal immigration crisis," DeSantis proclaimed.

The Republican leader approved measures mandating state and local participation in enforcing federal immigration laws, criminalizing unauthorized entry into Florida, and ending the "catch and release" policy for criminal aliens. "These are all excellent policies," he emphasized on his X account.

The newly signed legislation introduces the death penalty for undocumented immigrants convicted of capital offenses such as first-degree murder or child rape. This measure extends beyond former President Donald Trump's executive orders, with Democrats and lawmakers arguing its unconstitutionality and hinting at potential court challenges.

The laws also propose harsher penalties for all crimes committed by undocumented immigrants and establish a new offense for re-entering the state after illegal entry into the country. Another controversial provision, criticized by both parties, repeals the law allowing state students with illegal status to qualify for in-state tuition at public universities and colleges.

DeSantis has allocated $298 million towards the enforcement of these immigration laws. This funding will facilitate the hiring of over 50 new law enforcement officers specializing in immigration, provide grants for equipping and training local agencies, offer bonuses to officers assisting in federal operations, and reimburse the rental of detention centers.

According to Telemundo 51, the Republican-dominated House of Representatives and Senate will convene on Tuesday, followed by budget committee meetings the next day. On Thursday, both chambers are scheduled to hold plenary sessions to approve the proposed bills.
