Ambulance and Taxi Involved in Major Collision in Cárdenas

Wednesday, February 12, 2025 by Elizabeth Alvarado

In the city of Cárdenas, located in Matanzas, a significant collision unfolded on Wednesday morning involving an ambulance and a taxi. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, but both vehicles sustained considerable damage.

The accident took place at the intersection of Cristina and Palma streets, as reported by user Mayito Rivero in a video shared on Facebook. The collision left the vehicles with body damage, particularly the taxi, which suffered severe front-end destruction. The ambulance, part of the Integrated Medical Emergency System (SIUM), also endured front-end damage, with the impact shattering the driver's side headlight.

As of now, the reasons behind the incident remain undisclosed. Police and Ministry of the Interior (Minint) officials were present at the scene to investigate. Despite the absence of injuries or fatalities, the accident adds to the ongoing issue of material losses in service vehicles, a significant concern amid the country's intensifying economic crisis.

Just under a month ago, another ambulance in Matanzas was involved in an accident when it skidded on a steep street's polished concrete surface and crashed into a home's facade. These ambulance accidents are occurring with worrying frequency, exacerbating the already critical situation regarding these essential vehicles. Their scarcity continues to hinder medical care by delaying patient transport and potentially worsening health conditions.

This recent incident, although minor, contributes to the alarming streak of accidents marking the start of 2025. Many such incidents have had tragic outcomes, raising public concern. Recently, authorities reported a decline in traffic accidents throughout 2024, with fewer fatalities and injuries compared to the previous year.

Official statistics recorded 7,507 traffic accidents, resulting in 634 deaths and 6,613 injuries, showing a reduction from the numbers reported in 2023. The Specialized Transit Agency of the Revolutionary National Police (PNR) attributes the primary cause of accidents in Cuba to driver responsibility.
