The National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) has made a significant move to propel Cuban boxing into the professional realm by signing an agreement with the promoter AGON Sports & Events GmbH. This initiative aims to ensure that Cuban boxers participate in both national and international events, promising more lucrative financial rewards for some of the island's top fighters.
As part of this collaboration, Olympic double champion Roniel Iglesias (71 kg) and Jorge Soto (80 kg) are set to compete on February 28 in a professional boxing event in Yoshkar-Ola, Russia. Although their opponents have not yet been confirmed, the president of the Cuban Boxing Federation, Alberto Puig de la Barca, assured JIT of their participation and revealed that Iglesias will have another professional bout on March 7 in Russia.
Moreover, in April, the Paris 2024 titleholder Erislandy Álvarez (63.5 kg) will fight in the semifinal of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Professional World Cup in Beijing, China. Álvarez, a young and talented boxer, is scheduled to face Tajikistan's Bakhodur Usmonov in an eight-round match, following his victory over Kazakhstan's Adilet Kurmetov last November.
On the subject, journalist Aníbal Oliva shared on social media, "The most striking aspect is that AGON Sports is the same promoter behind the Scull vs. Canelo fight, suggesting that Cuban boxing could gain more visibility on major platforms."
"While the Canelo vs. Scull match is yet to be confirmed, this partnership between AGON Sports and INDER opens new doors for Cuban boxing both locally and internationally," added the Miami-based specialist.
This agreement marks a new chapter for Cuban boxing, aiming to expand its reach in the professional arena while maintaining the essence that has historically made the island a powerhouse in the sport.
