Health officials in Matanzas have issued a warning following the detection of fecal coliforms in the Bello water supply source, as revealed by a hygiene and epidemiology expert's analysis. Dr. Andrés Lamas informed TV Yumurí that this contamination poses a public health risk, urging residents to boil water before consumption or rely on water distributed by tanker trucks.

The contamination specifically impacts the water supply networks of El Naranjal, East and West Matanzas, as well as the Versalles district. Investigations suggest a possible link to a recent spill of cachaza from the Boris Luis Santa Coloma sugar mill in Mayabeque.

Previous studies have identified an underground connection between the sugar mill area and the Bello basin, implying that industrial and organic waste dumping might have compromised Matanzas's water quality. This recurring issue highlights the urgent need for stricter environmental measures to prevent future contaminations.

Though most coliform bacteria are harmless, some strains, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), can signal fecal contamination leading to gastrointestinal issues, fever, and general discomfort. Matanzas boasts high-quality carbonate-rich groundwater, thanks to its natural infiltration system through limestone rocks. However, the pollutant overload in the basin threatens this vital resource.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have reiterated their call for residents to take preventive measures when using potable water while solutions to halt basin contamination are implemented.

Recurring Water Issues in Cuba

This incident is not isolated in the broader crisis of water supply and quality in Cuba. In May 2024, a hepatitis outbreak in Cienfuegos was linked to contaminated drinking water, raising concerns over inadequate sanitary controls.

In March of the same year, residents of Mayabeque publicly complained about the poor quality of their tap water, describing it as cloudy with an unpleasant odor. Additionally, in Havana, residents of the Centro Habana neighborhood reported being without potable water for over ten days, worsening hygiene conditions in the area.

Understanding Water Contamination in Matanzas

What are fecal coliforms and why are they a concern?

Fecal coliforms are bacteria indicating fecal contamination, which can include harmful strains like E. coli. They pose health risks, causing illnesses such as gastrointestinal issues and fever.

How can residents protect themselves from water contamination?

Residents are advised to boil water before drinking or use water supplied by tanker trucks to ensure it is safe for consumption.

What measures are being taken to address the water contamination issue?

Authorities are monitoring the situation and calling for preventive actions from the public while working on solutions to reduce contamination in the basin.
