Why Blame Cuban Trump Voters for Cuba's Issues? Cuban Criticizes Fellow Compatriots in the U.S.

Friday, February 7, 2025 by Robert Castillo

A video shared on TikTok by user "Camagüeyano 100 por ciento" has sparked a heated debate on social media regarding the political stances of some Cubans in the United States, particularly those who criticize others for supporting Donald Trump. In his lengthy message, which has garnered thousands of interactions, the creator condemned the perceived hypocrisy within part of the Cuban community and defended the right to vote freely.

In the video, @elnegro.com87 voiced his frustration with the backlash against Trump supporters, pointing out that many Cubans in the U.S. aren't directly connected to Cuba's situation. "The Cubans who voted for Trump aren't responsible for the problems in Cuba," he declared. He continued, "Many of them came here as children, others were born here. They speak Spanish but feel nothing for Cuba. They want this country, the United States, to thrive."

Criticism of Hypocrisy and Political Preferences

The creator criticized those who label these voters as disloyal to their homeland, calling it an unfair oversimplification. "They shouldn't have to bear the burden of Cuba's issues or feel guilty about what's happening on the island," he remarked.

He also addressed the attitude of certain Cubans who criticize others for their political choices while benefiting from the American system. "Stop being so shameless and hypocritical, Cubans. If you're going to call any politician here, Republican or Democrat, shameless, then call out the politician in your country, the dictator, because that's why you left, because misery and disgust were killing you," he urged.

Reflections on Community and Responsibility

Furthermore, he criticized those who, in his view, focus solely on returning to Cuba to show off rather than caring about the island's real situation: "Stop posting nonsense on social media about cars and trips, because those things affect those who want to benefit from a law that aids Cubans," he warned.

The video didn't just touch on political issues, but also what he considers selfish attitudes within the community. "Everyone here is looking out for their own benefit. Now it seems many Cubans, after leaving everything in Cuba, want to act like the most family-oriented, but they left wives, children, parents, and friends behind when they left," he observed, adding, "Stop blaming others for what we don't do ourselves."

Community Reactions and Ongoing Debate

The video has so far prompted over 900 comments, reflecting a wide range of reactions. One user commented, "I'm Cuban, naturalized American, and I've lived here for 22 years. I'll never return to Cuba. I built my life here and voted for my son's and my own well-being." Another shared, "I've lived here for 44 years, and I agree with you. Some come here to work, others to live off tales."

Others joined the debate defending their decision to vote for Trump. "I'm Cuban and if he runs again, I'll vote for him. The Cubans saying that's wrong have turned this journey into a business," wrote one follower. Another commented, "I came 14 years ago and voted for Trump because I'm against the dictatorship. He's the only one who can do something about it."

Support for the creator's statements was also strong in comments like, "Cuba's problems have persisted for 63 years, and Trump has nothing to do with that," and "Here we vote for whoever we want, and the freedom to do so is what sets this country apart from Cuba." Another follower noted, "The Cuban living in Cuba doesn't care to see their country free, so what are we talking about?"

On the other hand, some used the opportunity to criticize those who, according to them, don't understand the political system they now live in. One user pointed out, "Many who arrived less than five years ago talk politics as if it's all that matters, but they don't want to adapt to the system." Another comment echoed, "If you don't like this country, then pack up and leave for another, because here, nothing comes without effort."

The ongoing debate in the post illustrates the political and social tensions within the Cuban exile community, a group defined by diverse generations and migratory experiences.
