Thursday, February 6, 2025 by Ernesto Alvarez

Mike Hammer, the Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Cuba, recently paid a visit to the revered Shrine of Our Lady of Charity in Santiago de Cuba, where he left a heartfelt offering to the Virgin. In a video shared on his Instagram account, Hammer is seen entering the Basilica to present a bouquet of sunflowers to the Virgin, a gesture he described as "beautiful and moving."

Known affectionately as "Cachita" by Cubans, the Virgin holds a special place in the hearts of many both on the island and abroad. Hammer observed objects embodying the deep connections between the United States and Cuba, including the Nobel Prize medallion of esteemed author Ernest Hemingway, along with memorabilia from Major League Baseball players.

"I hope that Cuba's patron saint grants the many Cubans their wishes for a freer and better future," Hammer expressed with hope. During his visit, he also met with Archbishop Dionisio García Ibáñez to discuss the challenging economic conditions in the eastern region and the Church's role in supporting the local community.

This marked Hammer’s inaugural trip to Santiago de Cuba as a U.S. representative, where he also visited the headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU) in Altamira. There, he engaged in a dialogue with opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer. "We talked for nearly five hours about various issues affecting our country today and the importance of Western solidarity with the Cuban people striving for their rights and democracy," Ferrer posted on social media.

Hammer listened to the experiences shared by Ferrer and evangelical pastor Lorenzo Rosales, who was also recently released from prison. They recounted their time incarcerated due to their political beliefs. "We are grateful for the significant solidarity shown by the current U.S. administration, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and their concern for the political prisoners still suffering in dire conditions across our nation," Ferrer emphasized.
