In Holguín, a family trio has been apprehended during an anti-drug operation, where they were found in possession of packages containing the potent synthetic drug referred to as "químico". This arrest was reported by the pro-government Facebook page "Cazador-Cazado", which detailed that the incident took place on a rented bus traveling from Havana.

The individuals involved have been identified as Ginlys Miguel Peralta Brindis, his partner Virgen Caridad Góngora Solano, and her son Pedro Pablo Parra Góngora. According to the report, law enforcement officers boarded the bus for inspection. During the inspection, Virgen attempted to evade arrest by discreetly sliding a small package towards a woman seated in front of her, but her actions were noticed.

Intensified Crackdown on Synthetic Drugs in Cuba

Cuban authorities have heightened their efforts to combat the trafficking of "químico", a synthetic drug mimicking marijuana's effects but with far greater potency and significantly higher risks. Its increasing popularity among the youth has raised alarms.

On January 15th, two women were detained in Havana, accused of distributing drugs to young residents in the Punta Brava locality, within the municipality of La Lisa. The police confiscated over 20 packets containing "químico" and methamphetamine, alongside a substantial amount of money from these women, who reportedly were unemployed and profiting from drug sales among teenagers, as reported by official journalist Frank Enrique.

The Dangerous Effects of "Químico"

The impact of "químico" can be severe. Short-term effects include euphoria, altered perception, nausea, rapid heartbeat, seizures, and loss of muscle control. Prolonged use can lead to anxiety, psychosis, hallucinations, and organ failure affecting the kidneys, liver, and heart.

Numerous incidents have been reported involving individuals under the influence of this drug displaying erratic and even aggressive behavior. This week, an incident in Pinar del Río involved a woman on "químico" assaulting passersby, disrupting traffic, and even damaging a vendor's goods by smashing a carton of eggs in a vehicle.
