U.S. Initiates Migrant Deportation Flights to Guantanamo: "Trump Wastes No Time"

Tuesday, February 4, 2025 by Isabella Sanchez

The United States announced on Tuesday the launch of its inaugural flight deporting migrants detained on American soil to the detention center at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. "President Trump wastes no time," stated White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt during an interview with Fox News.

A government official, speaking anonymously to Reuters, disclosed that the flight would carry nearly a dozen migrants. This operation has proceeded more swiftly than anticipated by Tom Homan, the so-called "border czar," who had indicated that deportations to Guantanamo would commence in 30 days, likely starting with a small number of deportees.

Leavitt emphasized on Tuesday that President Trump is determined not to allow the United States to become "a dumping ground for illegal criminals from countries around the world," highlighting the administration's commitment to fulfilling its promises. She stressed that the detention center at the base would house "illegal criminals who have violated the immigration laws" of the United States and who have committed further heinous crimes against American citizens.

Trump's objective is for the Guantanamo detention camp to accommodate approximately 30,000 individuals. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has mentioned that the plan does not intend to hold detainees at Guantanamo indefinitely, assuring that U.S. law would be respected. The Department of Homeland Security has not clarified whether women, children, or immigrant families will be included in these deportations.
