The Revolutionary National Police (PNR) in Santa Clara apprehended a truck laden with goods lacking legal documentation, seizing a total of 404 bags of rice, along with other items and cash. During this operation, authorities discovered 404 bags of rice, 132 sacks of squash, and 187,000 CUP in cash, without any legal contracts or documents to validate the source of these goods, as reported by journalist Henry Omar Pérez on Facebook.

Pérez highlighted that the documents provided were falsified. However, he did not specify whether the vehicle was privately owned or belonged to the state. Given its size, it is plausible that it was government property, and the origin of the merchandise remains unclear.

The operation led to the arrest of three individuals, who now face charges related to illegal economic activities. Investigations revealed that the truck driver had been promised 350,000 CUP for transporting the cargo, underscoring the scale of this illegal food trafficking network.

Recurring Seizures in Santa Clara

This is the second truck intercepted in Santa Clara carrying similar goods. In a previous operation, the PNR seized 150 bags of rice, bringing the total confiscated to 554 bags, which are reportedly handed over to government authorities for distribution. These actions, presented by officials as a commitment to combating corruption and resource misappropriation, also highlight the severe economic crisis and lack of control among regime officials.

Broader Efforts Against Illegal Activities

In December, a private truck carrying 88 sacks of locally-produced rice was halted at kilometer 141 of the National Highway near Jagüey Grande, Matanzas. According to the pro-government Facebook page “Con Todos La Victoria,” the shipment lacked the necessary legal documentation to prove its origin or ownership and did not have authorization from Agriculture or a Self-Employed Worker (TCP) license.

That same month, as part of the Cuban regime’s crackdown on illegal activities, an initiative by leader Miguel Díaz-Canel to project a proactive stance against crime, authorities detained two trucks loaded with 15 tons of rice in Cienfuegos. The pro-government Facebook page “Las Cosas de Fernanda” reported that, as part of the efforts to tackle illegalities in the Aguada de Pasajeros municipality, authorities intercepted two trucks transporting a total of 322 bags of rice, amounting to 15 tons.
